Good morning,

Today’s post is going to be about our grandma’s old-time tricks for stunning hair. If you’re curious what was used to improve the appearance of hair a long time ago, read on. Recipes for these secret mixtures were passed along to me by my grandma.

How to take care of hair if you don’t have any hair products close at hand?

Back in the days when our grandmas were young, there weren’t that many beauty brands to choose from. Hair care products were also much more difficult to find than they are today. Naturally, it was impossible to visit an online drugstore, click a few times and order some beauty products, choosing the home delivery option of course. Back then you had to get yourself off to a shop to get the beauty products, and there were really few items to pick from. No wonder that our grandmothers very often… made their own beauty products!

Today we can follow in their footsteps and learn how to improve the appearance of the hair without applying regular hair products. If you find this idea doubtful, please continue reading. I will try to convince all doubters that they don’t need a pile of hair products to get stunning hair. I’ll also try to help you realize that the best cosmetics can be found in the kitchen.

Grandma’s way to wash hair

Let’s begin with answering the following question: Can you wash the hair without a shampoo? Sure, you can do it! The easiest way would be washing hair with soap. Actually, this trend is returning because more and more cosmetic brands are offering shampoo bars, but the truth is that your grandma would suggest using a regular hard soap.

Obviously, it shouldn’t be forgotten that soap’s pH is alcanic, so it would be a good idea to follow it with a vinegar hair rinse – also homemade, prepared from apple vinegar or any other that you have at hand. If you think that using hair rinses is an invention of our times, then you’re wrong. Our grandmas did it before it was cool!

What are other alternatives to shampoo? I’ve heard that an interesting effect is also given by washing hair with baking soda, yet I’d suggest being careful with this idea. Baking soda may irritate the scalp and dehydrate hair.

Grandma’s way to make hair stronger

When your hair is finally clean, it’s time to apply something to make them stronger and deliver some nutrients. But how are you supposed to do so without a conditioner or mask? Well, grandma has tips for this too.

First, reach for unrefined plant oils. You thought that this trend for implementing natural oils into daily beauty rituals is some kind of novelty? You can’t be further from the truth. Even though our grandmas rather didn’t have the access to some exotic plant oils such as argan oil, monoi oil, kukui oil or cupacau butter, they have other oils that give similar effects, and they are rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, grape seed oil, or the king of all hair oils, which is castor oil (promotes hair growth).

The good news is that you can use the oils solo by just spreading them along the hair length, but you can also treat it as an ingredient of your home hair mask. I’ve snapped up two recipes for home hair masks that you can make, using the ingredients you already have at home.

● HOME EGG HAIR MASK

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 spoons oil

And that’s all! You need only two ingredients to make a wonderful egg mask for stronger hair. Combine egg yolk and oil, apply to hair, and rinse after 30 minutes (I’d suggest letting it sit longer). Wash your hair as you normally do this revealing stronger hair (proteins do that) that shines beautifully (oil boosts the shine).

● HOME HONEY AND YOGURT HAIR MASK

  • 1 spoon honey
  • 1 spoon yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon castor oil

This time we have got three ingredients, but all of them are easy-accessible. Honey is a natural moisturizer that kills bacteria. Yogurt soothes scalp irritations. Castor oil is responsible for reinforcement, making hair grow visibly quicker; it also makes it fuller-looking. Combine the ingredients and apply to the hair before washing. Spread the mask on damp hair.
