Hey Girls,

How does your skin feel after months of wearing face masks?

Pandemic has put all of us through it. We’re getting sick, keep distancing socially, and changing our lifestyle. We suffer, and many businesses suffer too. Rarely do we think, however, about the suffering our skin is going through. Therefore, this is what I want to talk about today. Enjoy!

Face mask. The best form of protection!

Do we need face masks? Sure, we do! I have no doubts about it. We wear them in public areas because keeping others safe is crucial now. Putting on a face mask, we contribute to fighting back the pandemic to finally make it disappear from our everyday life. If you don’t have any rare health issues, then wearing a face mask isn’t a big sacrifice. Let’s be responsible, huh?

On the flip side, it’s worth realizing and understanding how face masks affect the skin. Sadly, I don’t have good news for you.

How does wearing a face mask affect your skin?

First, we should begin with stating that skin needs to breathe. Just like it doesn’t like being hidden underneath heavy makeup, the skin doesn’t feel good with a face mask. Under the material there are warm air, moisture and all of the things we inhale (including bacteria) gathering. As a consequence, the problems like these may appear:

  • oily skin
  • blackheads, breakouts and imperfections
  • acne (it’s so common that it has its own name – mascne)
  • irritations and itching of face skin

Skin hidden under a face mask has a hard time. I notice that after a few months of wearing face masks breakouts start appearing around my nose, lips and cheeks. Complexion looks dull and is irritated. It looks far more tired than before the pandemic, but actually I’m not even surprised. I’m tired of all of this myself…

Skin under a face mask. How to take care of it

Luckily, there’s nothing that we wouldn’t be able to deal with! Wearing masks is compulsory, but you can help your skin a little bit and keep it away from acne and other skin imperfections. I’ve got a few ideas for you.

1. KEEP CHANGING YOUR FACE MASK OFTEN

The biggest mistake and crime against your complexion is wearing the same face mask for a few days straight, or even weeks. If a mask is disposable, then this isn’t just a secondary meaning but it’s really destined for a single use only. Actually, every face mask can be used only once – even a reusable face mask must be washed if you have been wearing it for a few hours.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT MASK

You know it well that there are a few types of face masks. It’s recommended choosing fabric that provides protection and is relatively good for skin at the same time. Soft materials are less irritating. It’s also suggested fitting and matching a mask to your face shape. Size matters because if too small, a face mask is no good for your skin.

3. TRY MULTI-STAGE FACE CLEANSING

Lastly, in this hard time I suggest introducing multi-stage face cleansing to your beauty routine. Washing skin just with water doesn’t do anything, actually it may even get things worse because tap water dehydrates skin (it may sound weird but it’s true). Firstly, I wipe my face with a micellar lotion to remove makeup, later I reach for a mild facial gel cleanser and finally I apply cosmetic oils dedicated for skin cleansing. I’m sure that after this treatment skin isn’t only 100% clean but also is nourished and protected from losing moisture. It really works!

And this is all I wanted to tell you. Don’t expose your skin to bacteria, keep good hygiene and make sure you cleanse your skin correctly, and you’ll be fine.
